A salary scale answers a question every company faces: how much should this person be paid, and why? When pay follows published grades, it is easier to set a new hire’s salary, apply yearly raises by one rule, and spot at once who is paid less or more than their peers. We built a template that is enough for a small or mid-sized company, and here we explain how to use it.
1. What is in the template
Four sheets:
- Grades: ten grades. For each, you enter a starting salary and a yearly step percentage. Steps 1 to 10 are worked out by formula, along with each grade’s minimum, midpoint and maximum. A “Below minimum wage?” column compares step 1 of each grade with the minimum wage in an editable cell (12,560) and shows in red any grade that falls below it.
- Jobs: list your company’s job titles and pick a grade for each, and its salary range appears.
- Employees: enter each employee’s name, pick their job title and step, and enter their current salary. Their grade, scale salary and the difference appear, with a red flag if the salary is below the grade minimum or above its maximum.
- How to use: the steps in short, inside the file.
Every amount, title and name in the template is an example only, in new Syrian pounds. Replace them with your company’s figures. Yellow cells are inputs; the rest are formulas.
2. How the steps are worked out
Step 1 is the grade’s starting salary. Each later step equals the previous step × (1 + the yearly step %), rounded to the nearest pound. So a grade starting at 24,000 pounds with a 3% step reaches 31,315 pounds at step 10. The minimum is step 1, the maximum is step 10, and the midpoint is halfway between them.
3. How to use it
- Rank your company’s jobs from the simplest to the most senior, and spread them across the ten grades.
- On the Grades sheet, enter each grade’s starting salary and step %. Make sure the lowest salary on the scale is not below the minimum wage in force, now 12,560 new pounds a month under Decree 67 of 2026.
- On the Jobs sheet, list the titles and pick each one’s grade.
- On the Employees sheet, enter your employees, their steps and current salaries, then check the Flag column.
- At the yearly raise, move each employee up one step and their new salary comes straight from the scale.
Salaries in the template are gross, before social insurance and salary tax. To estimate net pay for any salary on the scale, try the net salary calculator.
4. Where the template falls short
- Not linked to monthly payroll: when you change an employee’s step, you carry the new salary to the payroll sheet yourself.
- No history: it does not know when an employee reached their current step, and it will not remind you when a raise is due.
- Easy to break: typing over a formula or deleting a row on the Grades sheet is enough to throw off the scale salary, and nothing warns you.
If you want the scale to flow into payroll
In Diwan, each employee’s file holds their job title, salary and the date of every change, and salaries flow into the monthly payroll run on their own, with insurance and tax. Sign your company up for free and add your employees from an Excel file.
